An @reply is any Twitter update directed at someone else, designated by a prefix of '@username' before the message.
What is an @ Reply?
An @reply is any Twitter update directed at someone else, designated by a prefix of '@username' before the message.
People say lots of things on Twitter, and sometimes you want to say something back. In fact, early Twitter folks wanted to talk to each other so badly that they started using the @+username+message to designate an update as a reply. (For example, @joe40 I love that song too!) Since people loved using it so much, we made it an official thing. Now you can send anyone on Twitter a reply, and you don't have to follow or be followed by a person to send one- all replies show up in the replies tab regardless of following.
How do replies work?
Hover over an update in your timeline to see two icons at the right end: a star (to mark a post as favorite) and a curvy arrow that we call the swoosh. Click on the swoosh and we'll automatically add @username in the update box above, and all you have to do is finish the sentence and click update!
Send an @reply to another person by text: preface your message with @username + message, like this: @alissa I also <3 sockington
All @replies have a contextual "in reply to" link so you can trace conversations back to the original update. Replies:
- are displayed in your home page based on the @reply settings
- are viewable on public profiles and in message archives
- from protected profiles are only visible to approved followers
- must use the user name and no other name to appear in the original person's replies tab. (For example, when replying to Carol, you'd want to make sure to use her username, @i_heart_pigtown, in order for your reply to appear in her Replies tab.)
- will only appear in the Replies tab if the "@username" begins the update.
To see your @replies:
- Log in to Twitter
- Click Replies (in the right hand sidebar)
- See all updates sent in reply to your twitters
- Reply to replies by clicking on the swoosh
All replies to you will appear in the replies tab in the right hand sidebar, excepting replies from people you've blocked.
What are the @reply settings?
Change your reply settings to control how many replies you see in your home page. You have three options:
- all @replies: see all of the @replies from people you follow, whether or not you follow the person to whom the reply is directed.
- @replies to the people I'm following: see @replies from people you follow directed toward other people that you also follow. This is the default setting.
- no @replies: never see any @replies in your timeline, ever
To change your @reply settings:
1. Log in to Twitter
2. Click Settings
3. Click Notices
4. Select the appropriate setting: all or nothing, or somewhere in between.
5. Save your changes
Note: these settings do not affect your replies tab, they only affect replies in your home page made from people you follow to people they follow. You'll still see all replies made to you in your own replies tab even if you have your settings set to "no @replies.
